v0.17.0

¡Nuevo nombre!

A brand-new name! The game is now called Crystal Bond: Tales of Astalia. Your saved games still work: on PC they are moved over automatically the first time you launch the game.

What's new

  • A new opening scene. Every new game now begins in the dark: a voice you can't place calls out to you, a crystal shatters... and you wake up in the forest with a little fire fox sniffing your face, remembering nothing. Then the old Hermit walks up, and the adventure begins. It plays only once per save, and you can skip it with Esc.
  • A tutorial with the Hermit: "First Steps". When you wake up, the Hermit shows you how to move, jump on creatures to start with an edge, wear them down and bond with them using your Crystal, with on-screen tips that show the keys or touch buttons of your device. When you're done he gives you potions and coins. If you fall before reaching Astalia, he carries you back to his clearing and heals your creatures for free. Already know how to play? You can skip it.
  • New secret areas. Seven hidden spots across Astalia and Vesperia: caves behind cracks, hollow trunks and chasms that, instead of hurting you, drop you somewhere else. Look for a faint glimmer in unlikely places (start with the forest where you wake up). Inside you'll find treasure and four creature families that live nowhere else.
  • Dialogue portraits. Whoever is talking appears on the left and you on the right, story scenes included. More than 40 characters now have their own hand-drawn portrait.
  • All 199 creatures redrawn. Every species has new art and the evolution lines make more sense: each stage now clearly grows out of the previous one.
  • Names that match the new art. 13 creatures have been renamed to fit their new look: the chick-to-peacock line is now Chicklet, Roostgallant and Peacrest, and you'll also meet Shroomlet, Possumo, Boarlet, Implet, Twigshell, Igniskull, Stormdrake and the legendary Selenfae, among others. Creatures you've already caught are kept: only the species name changes.
  • Battle backgrounds for each area. Fights no longer always take place in the meadow: there are forest, gloomlands, cave, snow, desert, volcano, coast, ruins, storm and crystal scenes.
  • Richer story scenes. Moving to a new region now comes with its own scene and act title, the sea voyage is longer and more moving, and the ending has a brand-new epilogue showing what becomes of your companions... plus a surprise after the credits. Eleven new illustrations, and scene text that's easier to read.

Improvements

  • Clearer sizes in the open world. Wild creatures are a bit smaller, and the hero, villagers and trainers are bigger outdoors, so it's easier to see who's who. In battle every creature is shown at full size.
  • Railings and props in front. In towns, ports and interiors, balcony and porch railings, rope bridges, lanterns, counters and tables are now drawn in front of the characters, so everything blends into the scenery.
  • Smoother paths. Small steps now have ramps and narrow gaps have walkways, so there are fewer pointless jumps. The balcony in Valdeluz square and the upper gallery of Aldric's mansion have also been fixed.
  • Better on iPhone and iPad. When playing in the browser, double-tapping or pinching no longer zooms the page by accident, text fields don't enlarge the screen, and a message reminds you to turn your phone sideways.
  • New loading and title screens. While the game downloads in your browser you'll see the new logo, a loading bar with its own crystal, artwork and landscapes fading into each other with the hero, Zorrel and other creatures running by, and handy tips (bonding, stomping, terrain, secret spots, evolution). The title screen has four new landscapes (Astalia at dusk, the snowy mountains, Vesperia's beach and a crystal cavern) that change every time you open the game, and moving to a new area now fades smoothly and shows the place's name.
